Well & Wellhead Management: |
|
Well & Wellhead ManagementWater that fills the openings or pore spaces in sand, gravel, and rock formations in the ground is called groundwater. A formation containing a usable amount of water is called an aquifer. Groundwater from aquifers is a major source of water in Nebraska. It is a vital source for agricultural irrigation and for drinking water. Wells are used to access groundwater. Nebraska is blessed with abundant groundwater that is generally of good quality. Even so, testing the water from a well is a good idea in many situations. This might include testing the quality of the water from a new drinking water well, periodically monitoring the quality of an existing well, or testing irrigation water for nutrients. Safeguarding groundwater quality depends on proper well design, construction, and management. Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services regulations are designed to help protect groundwater quality. These regulations cover well design and consruction, registration of new wells, and the proper decommissioning of out-of-service wells. |
There are thousands of unused wells on farmsteads, acreages and other rural properties throughout the state which are old and/or substandard and which State law refers to as illegal. Illegal wells pose a major threat to groundwater quality, human health and safety, and are required by Nebraska regulations to be properly decommissioned. If there is an unused well on your property, begin the decommissioning process today. |
