Estimating Crop Nutrients

NMP Section 7: Estimating Crop Nutrient Requirements and Credits

Purpose:

Crop nutrient requirements must be estimated annually based upon the most recently available information for soil tests, irrigation water nitrate concentration, previous years– crop performance, and other information gathered by the producer. Since this information is not typically available at the time of a permit application, estimating crop nutrient requirements as part of a permit is, at best, an educated guess made without essential information. However, the underlying principles and assumptions that will be used to estimate crop nutrient requirements can be defined in a permit application. In addition, an example of how these calculations will be implemented is shared in Section 12- Annual Plan.

This section describes the calculations and assumptions that will be used to annually estimate individual field crop nutrient requirements.

Fertilizer Suggestions for Corn, Extension Circular 117. Fertilizer nutrient requirements for corn are based on expected yield and nutrient levels in the soil.

Software:

Manure Use Plan for Nebraska: *.xls Spreadsheet; Instructions.
Estimates the nutrient value of manure and accurately credits those nutrients against the nutrient requirements of a crop. Maintains an 11 year record for 25 fields for manure and fertilizer application rate plans. This spreadsheet can be used for creating and maintaining an annual nutrient plan.

The Manure Management Planner and Plan Generator (MMP) is a program developed and located at Purdue University for making nutrient management plans for crop and animal feeding operations.

UNL Corn N Calculator *.xls Spreadsheet
The Corn Nitrogen Needs Calculation Worksheet for Nebraska was developed to ease estimation of the most economical N rate for corn grain production. It is a computerized form of the University of Nebraska formula for determining fertilizer N requirements for corn. The formula is based on information from 80 research trials conducted across Nebraska.
