Can I find and retain a sufficient workforce?

Securing a workforce for an animal operation is crucial to its sustainability. For many operations in the Midwest, labor limits their production size. During 2019, Nebraska Department of Labor reported that 75.7% of employers in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting sectors of Nebraska faced difficulties finding workers.

Before starting a new operation, a producer must evaluate the availability of labor in their region and the labor demand of the new operation. Other farms and industries nearby your operation may compete for your workforce; competitive salaries and benefits may need to be considered to attract workers to your company.

It is also important to be familiar with Nebraska’s labor statutes and regulations and hiring foreign workers regulations.
