The UNL Animal Manure Management team’s first Art Challenge comes to an end with state-wide contributions showing how much “Manure Matters in Nebraska”

What a summer we have had in 2022! The manure team has been active across the state, sharing all the reasons why manure matters in Nebraska. During our in-person events this summer, we had a lot of fun talking with kids of all ages about the diverse types of manure, how manure provides nutrients to growing crops, and how manure helps improve soil health and water quality. We hope that all the kids we talked to learned how much manure matters in Nebraska.

We also asked our in-person participants to submit some of their own more artistic interpretations of how “Manure Matters in Nebraska” for a chance to win a fun prize. You can check out all the gorgeous manure-themed entries in the gallery below, but we want to take this opportunity to highlight this year’s manure art winners:

Manure Matters, by Gracie Rewinkel

Gracie Rewinkel, Wakefield

Gracie's poop emoji picture, titled “Manure Matters” emphasizes blue tones, we wondered if Gracie might be reflecting on all the water in manure but maybe we’re overthinking it.

The Cow, by Arianna Chrisman

Arianna Chrisman, McCool Junction

Arianna’s “The cow” seems to be very proud of the benefits her manure is having on soil health and the environment.

Brillantina, Salome Castro Villamil

Salome Castro Villamil, Lincoln

Salome submitted a colorful poop emoji titled “Brillantina” and I do believe the lady’s put her face on for this pic. Just look at the curl on those lashes!

Garden Work, Emma

Emma, Elm Creek

Emma’s colorful reminder of the value of manure in Nebraska is titled “Garden Work.” Gardening is a great opportunity to see the value of healthy soil, and composted manure right up close, thanks to Emma for taking time out of working in the garden to submit her entry.

Crazy Poop, by Lucy

Lucy, Laurel

Lucy's poop emoji picture, titled “Crazy Poop” includes the addition of many interesting details. Look closely and you will find that Lucy has made sure to give many of the animals depicted in the picture housing or food. I think we may have a budding farmer here folks!

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, and to everyone who submitted a piece this year to remind us why “Manure Matters in Nebraska.”
